My commercial Skill Jig Saw had died on me and I needed to buy another one to complete a project with. So, when I saw this one, I decided to order it and give it a try. Here is what i found:

1. First, this one is as powerful as my commercial rated skill was. Both have 5 Amp motors. That being said, they also both have variable speed from 0 to 3000 SPM. The only difference between the two is that the skill had the ability to limit the trigger to different speeds while this Black and Decker unit depends upon you to stop squeezing when you get to the speed you want.

2. The Black and Decker unit is much more comfortable to grip over a long period of time. The handle provides some absorption of the saw while the Skill unit did not.

3. The quick release on this for inserting blades is GREAT!!! MUCH better than having to use an allen wrench every time you wanted to change a blade with the Skill unit I had. The system seems to work on all of the old blades that I have as well as the new stye blade that was included with the Black and Decker unit.

4. The bevel plate adjustment is about the same between the two except for two things:

A. The Black and Decker unit uses a slot/Philips screw while the Skill uses an Allen screw. If you are going to do any amount of changing of that plate, you will want to get rid of that slot/philips screw and use an Allen. The reason is that the slot/philips screw will get its head messed up quickly making for poor adjustments while the Allen will take a lot of abuse.

B. The plate on the Black and Decker unit is larger than that of the Skill unit which makes it easier to use.

5. The large dial adjustment for the blade is easier to use than the lever for the same adjustment on the Skill unit.

6. The wire protective cage makes the saw safer and allows for easy sight of the line that you are cutting.

All in all, this is an exceptional tool for home use!! It may not be suitable for commercial use, but then again, it may. So far I am very pleased with the saw (used it to cut out 11 window openings residing a house) and I would highly recommend it.

We are not pros. We aren't even what I'd call "experts" at woodworking. We're just average homeowners who are trying to renovate an old house and do a few wood projects with limited tools and space.

We have also bought a LOT of tools in the past three years to do the work. Some have been great, while others have been the source of much cursing and some near miss accidents due to malfunctions. Unfortunately, a lot of the malfunctions have been with B&D power tools. That meant I was not overly excited about this saw. That old saying about once bitten, twice shy was definitely where I was at. We'd just had an incident with a B&D drill trigger sticking that had nearly ended in disaster, and it was a tool that had rarely seen much use in the past two years since we'd bought it.

This saw seems better made than the tools we'd bought previously in the orange color scheme. It is easy to hold for both my husband and myself. (I don't have really tiny hands, but they are also within the range of "normal" for a woman.) That's a huge plus, I hate feeling like I'm still a child when I go to use power tools with excessively large grips. At the same time, my husband doesn't want to feel like he's using a toy saw. This Black & Decker is placed in a very good comfort range for both of us.

It's easy to use, as long as you use it as it should be used. A jig saw is nearly an essential for cutting plywood for smaller or curved pieces. It's versatile and easy to carry to the actual spot you are working rather than lugging things to and from the shop to work on them too. It's also great for fairly simple craft projects when I don't want to bother with the scroll saw.

Overall, I regard a jig saw as an "essential" for any home improvement arsenal of tools. This one is a good option for the average homeowner to have. It's also one of the least intimidating for women to initially use. (Ladies, think of it like a sewing machine, but the "needle" has teeth on it to chew through the wood instead of stitching it. Same principle!) It's not quite as loud and doesn't feel like it is going to escape and destroy everything in its path.

I'd not want to use this to cut siding to re-side a house, nor build one with just this saw, and I'd hate to use this to cut whole sheets of plywood, but for those smaller jobs, I do love it. This saw is a reasonably well made tool for the money, and will probably give you years of occasional service if you take care of it.

I can think of a lot of improvements for this tool, but then I remember that I didn't pay even $45 for it. It's a high quality jig saw, looks and feels very well made, and has a lot of power. The only downside for me is that is hard to follow your cutting line, this jig saw does not have any marks that tell you where the cutting center is, but if you know how to cut wood you will workaround that limitation.

At age 65 I am just beginning to understand the "do it yourself" satisfaction that comes from performing tasks rather than hiring them out. My father was a great proponent of this but of course since that was his kind of thing, I didn't want anything to do with it. Like others my age, I had the choice in high school of either taking "Industrial Arts" or "Home Economics". Since I didn't expect to need wood working skills in future jobs, I chose not to participate-- much to the chagrin of my father. It dawned on me later that taking "Home EC" would have been a great way to schmooze the girls. Another opportunity missed.

But now that I'm retired and doing more things around our home, I realized that there are many other things that I am capable of doing myself rather than paying to have it done. It of course starts with simple projects easy to figure out (as long as you have the right tools), and progresses to more complicated work that you can ask the guys at Home Depot about (or watch on YouTube). Each time I look at a more difficult project, I tell myself that millions of other people have undertaken the same project with success. And that if I don't succeed the first time, all I have to do is try again.

I admit to a fondness for Black And Decker because of the great results I've had with several of their battery powered tools. Since I was looking for my first Jig Saw, when this became available through the Vine program, I quickly researched it and gained additional comfort with it because Amazon had awarded it with their "Best Seller" status. I always like to have the best tools available, but only once I have learned how to properly use them. It doesn't make sense to either break an expensive tool because of inexperience or to order an advanced model unless you are capable of using all of the advantages offered by it.

For the price, this is a surprisingly good jig saw. Well built by a reputable company, great ergonomics, easy to understand and use. This is a great starter jig saw for newbies like me who are slowly expanding their skill set. Use it for what it is designed for and don't be tempted to abuse it by going beyond its capabilities. Highly recommended.

This little thing is amazing! I recently started doing furniture refurbishing, and some other small projects. I really been getting into pallet type furniture. And obviously the pallet wood needed sawed down to my appropriate needs.
This little thing did exactly what it was supposed to. I finished a whole dresser top, with simply measuring and cutting with this. It only comes with one blade, so if you're doing different projects he would definitely benefit from buying extra. But overall this was a fantastic by, and I'll be sure to be using this for years to come

I have two saws: a Bosch JS470EB 7-Amp Barrel-Grip and this saw. Compared to the Bosch this is much lighter and more maneuverable especially for curves. In comparison I don't notice any power issues with 3/4" stock. I suppose the Bosch is better for long or heavy duty use (and is a fine tool) - but for me I try this saw first.

This is an excellent saw. I read a lot of reviews before I bought this. I am a woman and like lightweight tools and this fits the bill. It works great for turning corners. It seems to be a quality saw that I will be able to use for years.

Wow....this little jig saw is something else. I bought it for myself to do craft projects and other woodworking projects. Ease of changing blades was a snap and really had some good get up and go in varying speeds. My husband really likes it, too. For the money, you can't go wrong trying this jig saw.

Those pruning saws always cut well when new but seem to get dull very quickly. With their close set, needle-like teeth they're also difficult to sharpen - and I've sharpened regular saws using saw sets and files. Eac...
