The DCD771 is a detuned version of the classic Dewalt 2-speed, 1/2" chuck, VSR drill. Bigger, heavier, slower, less power, lower capacity batteries, slower charger, soft case, no belt or bit holder. Built to a price point of $99 on sale. Great for the once a month DIYer, not an everyday contractor tool.

The closest contractor grade version of this drill kit is the DEWALT DCD780C2 20-Volt Max Li-Ion Compact 1.5 Ah Drill/Driver Kit which is $200+ shipped. Potentially double the price if you can find the 771 on sale. I don't own a 780 so the comparison is based on published data, not personal experience.

More detailed comparison of DCD771 and DCD780:

- Lot longer (8.7" vs. 7.5")
- Heavier (3.6 lbs vs 3.4 lbs)
- Less powerful (300 UWO vs. 350 UWO)
- Slower (0-450/0-1500 RPM vs. 0-600/0-2000 RPM)
- Two 1.3Ah vs. 1.5Ah batteries
- Slower non-temperature compensating charger (60 mins vs. 30 mins)
- Contractor bag instead of a hard plastic case
- No belt clip, bit holder or bit, but a place for both
- Drill, battery & charger Made in China vs Assembled in USA from International parts

BATTERIES & CHARGER:
The Li-Ion 20V batteries have multiple cells which can individually drift, the charger can correct for this drift under known conditions: temperature. The 771 charger can only accurately charge the batteries when both the battery and charger are between 65 and 75 F. Whereas the included charger for the 780 has a cold/hot delay to compensate for cold/hot batteries. Charging outside the 65-75 temperature window will shorten the battery life, by how much?, that's the $64K question. For a homeowner, the 65-75 restriction is no big deal, for a contractor time is money. The 771 charger has two keyed holes on 4" centers to hang it on a wall. Cord appears to be 6-foot long. I typically go two days on a charge when I'm using it a lot (drilling holes, driving screws, mixing stain), otherwise weeks.

DRILL PERFORMANCE:
The 771 arrived 12-2, charged the battery until the charger stopped flashing. Chucked a Torx T-30 bit and it took 50-sec to drive and remove a 5/16 x 4" Lag Screw into a pine log three times, color me impressed. My 30 YO B&D 3/8" 120V VSR drill managed to get the same screw halfway in before it stalled. In fairness to the B&D drill, shifting the 771 to high and it also stalled. It was almost dark and the LED light was almost blinding. Stayed on for a least 10-sec after the switch was released.

The bag is spacious, was able to get both drills inside. The drill is very stout, you can tell there is steel inside. The entire back and handle is grippy rubber, the black. This may be a low dollar Dewalt, but it definitely isn't cheap.

One of my favorite uses for the 771 is auto repair. Use a 1/4" hex to square socket adapter SE 7503SD 3-Piece Power Extension Bit Set for Drills, set to slow speed/high torque, and watch those bolts fly off. The 771 won't remove lug nuts but not much else will resist.

This drill is a beast. DEWALT products have never let me down, and so far this drill is no exception. First of all, it's an amazing deal. At nearly $90 for one replacement battery, even just the two 1.5mah batteries that this unit comes with should be more expensive than the whole kit. Instead for just over $100 you get two batteries, a fast charger, a soft case and the of course the drill. Frankly if I had other DEWALT 20V tools, I'd buy this kit just for the batteries.

This drill is a no-nonsense drill. There are very few bells and whistles, just a workhorse powerful drill with great batteries. It's extremely small and lightweight, probably half of the weight I'm used to holding with normal NiCad battery drills. However after getting used to the lighter weight of the battery, it feels balanced and stable, with a good fit for my larger hands. But it has at least the same amount of punch of a bigger heavier drill, lasting longer with no fade. I love that this drill performs at 100% and dies quickly - the performance is strong until the end. And with the fast charger, by the time battery A is dead, battery B is fully charged and ready to go. The batteries also seem to hold their charge for indefinite periods of time.

One feature I like is the light (the one bell and/or whistle this drill has). I've had other drills with lights - that's nothing new. However, in a few different models, the light would only operate when the trigger was being pulled. If I'm lining up a bit or a screw in a circumstance that requires light, it's not easy to do if the drill is spinning. This light stays on for ~10 seconds after the trigger is released, allowing you to tap the trigger to engage the light, line up the bit or screw, and resume drilling/driving.

The build quality is great. The drill feels solid and strong. My only complaint is the plastic chuck. While I've had no trouble getting up to 1/2" bits into the chuck firmly, it feels cheap - much cheaper than the black metal DEWALT chuck I'm used to. But I guess with this product they had to cut corners somewhere, and if I can still firmly grip a bit, I don't care what the chuck is made out of.

Note: DEWALT seems to be measuring their drills in Unit Watts Out, rather than in/lbs. While this makes sense, as UWO supposedly takes into account both speed and torque, it's confusing. According to this article on ProToolReviews (http://www.protoolreviews.com/buying-guides/max-watts-out/13109/), in/lbs can be approximately calculated with the following formula:

Speed (RPM) x Torque (inch pounds) / 560 = Max Watts Out (estimated). Note that you must use the lower speed to get the higher torque reading.

At 300 UWO, that puts this drill at about 373in/lbs in the low speed setting - not the best, but not bad. Certainly there are more powerful drills, but this one is certainly competitive, and with a name like DEWALT, I felt it was the best bang for my buck. I have yet to be proven wrong.

As a man who swears by DeWALT and has owned several battery variations of their drills, this one is quickly becoming my favorite. Extremely lightweight in comparison to the 18 volt models. The battery size is tiny but packs a huge punch.

I got this item in perfect shipped condition, as expected. Both batteries were fully charged and ready to go. All in all, this is probably one of the best "bang for your buck" purchases I have ever made. At time of purchase, I paid $99 for the drill, two batteries, charger, and bag. Two replacements batteries alone are more than that! I immediately got to work building a table for our kitchen (see pictures). This drill was used for drilling the pocket hols with the Kreg drill. I did not count exactly, but this tool lasted hours of drilling pocket holes in yellow pine before the battery gave out. No slow dying, it just quits which is excellent. I swapped batteries and the charge was complete long before the second battery ran out of juice.

If you are a professional, perhaps you need more power/torque, etc. For the handyman or DIYer, I highly recommend this drill.

This is the greatest tool, I can go fast and screw things in or go slow if I want to not strip the screw out. I love the fact that there are two batteries with it, they last me all day.
There is a little light just above the trigger that can help out in the dark spaces.

Excellent quality cordless drill. Bought to replace my ancient Makita. Battery life is very good. Half inch chuck is a good bonus. Seller was very easy to deal with when one of the two batteries was defective. The new version of this drill is supposed to be slightly lighter and a little smaller but this one does everything that my old Makita can do and does it better.

I sold all my old 18v DeWalt cordless tools and upgraded to these 20v tools. Why? Because a replacement lithium ion 3ah battery for my 18v tools cost $129, and I couldn't find any 3rd party batteries. I just bought new 20v 4ah lithium ion batteries for $54 each! And you can now get 5ah li-ion batteries for $75 each! So, something is wrong here. Does DeWalt give good deals on the 20v batteries to get people to upgrade? I don't know, but it worked for me! I just hope they don't raise the prices on the 20v batteries, LOL! Overall I like DeWalt as well or better than any of the other big names. Makita and DeWalt seem to have the cheapest batteries. Porter Cable really have dropped their prices to maybe 25% less than DeWalt, Makita, Bosch, and Milwaukee. Did their quality drop? If not, they're a good deal.

This is a starter set. They give you two really low amp hour batteries. I'm not sure if they're 1.3 amp hour, or just 1 amp hour, but they won't last very long. You can now get 5 amp hour Dewalt 20v batteries that aren't much heavier that last a long time! So if you buy this, you might want to buy a 3, 4, or 5 amp hour battery.

I use it mostly for counter sinking holes in steel. Most drill run too fast and it's hard on the countersink. This is exactly what I was looking for , small to get into confined spaces, powerful and on the slower end of the rpm rage.. I have to keep it under lock and key or the other guys in the shop want to steal it..

Edit to the below: you must snap in battery into the charger for it to charge, it's not obvious and it's not mentioned in the instructions. It still works perfectly and is awesome!

Old: am extremely surprised Amazon continues to sell this set up. It is absolute garbage. This is my second replacement set, and the batteries do not take or hold a charge. They literally indicate a full charge in less than a minute and the batteries last less than a minute. Just ridiculous.

Those pruning saws always cut well when new but seem to get dull very quickly.
