Update 2016: Well the downside to this nifty little tool was once the battery wore out, it wasn't cost effective to buy another one. Instead, I switched to the WEN 2307 Variable Speed Rotary Tool Kit with 100-Piece Accessories which is a plug in unit. I'm similarly happy with the Wen and highly recommend it!

I was looking for a grinding tool to use for trimming my dogs' nails since they don't like clippers and I refuse to pay a vet or groomer for something so simple...especially since I have four dogs. I did some research, checked Amazon reviews for various products, watched prices on both Amazon and Ebay (used and new) and ended up buying the Dremel 7300 cordless MiniMite new on Amazon.

After only about a week of introducing my dogs to the tool (using the instructions on doberdawn.com which is very detailed and great for the newbie...they don't sell anything, just an advice site), I'm now able to get my dogs to lie there while I do nail trimmings. This is a HUGE improvement over using typical dog clippers! I'm simply amazed at how well they took to it.

After reading about the PediPaws and similar items, then the Dremel models/options, I went with the MiniMite because it's similar to the Pedipaws except there's no guard (I haven't found this to be an issue) and it works better, is sturdier, and lasts longer according to other reviewers. I've only had it for two weeks, so I can't give feedback on longevity yet...but I do know it will be getting lots of use at our house, so time will tell. And we are still using the first sanding wheel, haven't had to replace it yet.

Plus it's cordless, so it's easier to use for the dogs anywhere in the house or outside (in warmer weather). So far I haven't had to recharge the battery (I've been using it daily for about two weeks now).

If you're struggling with dogs who hate nail clippers, I highly recommend trying a MiniMite. I have four dogs ranging size from 11 lbs to 67 lbs and it works well for all of them. I bought this specific one because I wanted more than one speed and I didn't need a lot of attachments to go with it. This is nice and compact and not so noisy that it scares the dogs. Both the MiniMite and the charger fit on my desk, within easy reach whenever I need to do some nail trimming. There's no cord on the charger, it just plugs directly into a wall outlet and you click the MiniMite battery into the charger base. It's 2-1/2" deep (sticking out from the outlet), so you need a spot where there's about 4-5" of clearance to easily plug in/remove the battery & charger. A counter outlet or a wall outlet that's not next to furniture are both good choices.

I've never had a Dremel or similar model of hand grinder. It's a handy little tool and I'm sure I'll find other uses for it in time. But for right now, I'm VERY happy with the results on my dogs' nails (and no rough edges like you get with nail clippers).

My 77 year old wife has had every toe with a hard yellow fungus instead of normal toe nails for quite a few years. I've been taking her to a Podiatrist to shave off the hard crusty surfaces so her toes don't snag on her stockings. I read the reviews about this MiniMite being used to trim dog and cat nails and I thought it would work for my wife's problem. Using this tool with a sandpaper head, I was able to duplicate what the Podiatrist has been doing for several years. I've cancelled her Podiatrist appointment and will be using this excellent tool to keep her toes trimmed. Any of you folks who have a similar problem with toe fungus might want to use this tool instead of paying a Podiatrist to do it for you. To be able to see what I'm doing, I purchased and use the Streamlight 61052 LED Headlamp with Strap from Amazon and this also works fine.

Good for grinding your dog's nails, or other light duty jobs, with some drawbacks as I'll mention below:

First of all, I use this Dremel exclusively for trimming the nails on my three dogs. They don't like the painful clippers but sit comfortably for the Dremel and it's a win-win situation because I can get their nails smooth and rounded without causing them any pain.

As others have mentioned, the battery is NiCad which is an old technology that Dremel should not be using on this tool. Unless you let the battery completely drain down to zero, the battery will begin to hold less and less of a charge. Eventually, you're going to either have to bite the bullet and buy another battery for $20, or live with the short battery life. I personally have2 batteries because I cannot run out of juice in the middle of trimming nails.

The other reason I bought this Dremel is that it is cordless (obviously, since we're talking about the NiCad batteries) so it is easy to maneuver, especially in tight places, in my case, around my dog's paws. It's also much quieter than your standard AC powered Dremel so it's less frightening for the dogs.

For speed, you have a high and low setting. I never use the low setting as I feel it is just too slow. The fast setting is just right for most applications.

So, all in all, I'd recommend this Dremel, but only for very specific applications where the full-size Dremel will not work. Keep in mind, this things costs less than $30 and you know what that means: you get what you pay for.

My sister wanted this to file her own toe nails. We each have a battery operated device for our fingernails, and I have no problem with it on my toenails; however, my sister is 80 and her toenails are quite thick. She is delighted with this device.

I bought this for filing my dogs nails! They have thick dark nails that grow quickly, this is the best way to trim their nails as short as possible without hurting the quick.

Advice for tool newbies like me that thought the accessories do not fit- I almost returned it because I the collet was too small! The black piece is the collet nut, there's a smaller silver piece inside that is wider at the front, that is the collet. Maybe some people did receive the wrong collet, but for me this was not the case. If the item you received is like mine, right out of the box the collet was wedged into the collet nut so hard that the tip of the collet is too narrow to fit an accessory. Remove the collet nut (which brings the collet out too since its jammed in so hard). Use one of the accessory shafts to press down firmly on the collet, push until it falls out of the nut. Reinsert the collet loosely into the nut so that the opening does not tighten, now you should be able to fit the accessories! I hope that helps.

I bought this product as a grooming tool for my Pugs' nails. I am SO glad that I purchased this version, because it is just right. The battery charged quickly, and as opposed to my electric (plug in) Dremel, it has just enough power to get the job done QUICKLY but not so much that it won't slow down when pressure is applied. Since our Pugs normally hate the "guillotine" clippers, our groomers have been using Dremels on them for the last couple of years. I was pleasantly surprised that when I was done trimming one dog's nails, the other gleefully ran over to me to get hers done. I will say, unless you're grooming a whole troop of dogs, you might not need to buy extra sanding rolls. But if you have a small dog, I recommend the 1/4" rolls instead of the 1/2" rolls (it comes with both). One thing that I really like about this Dremel for this purpose is, if you're worried about using a high-speed instrument on your dog, you have a great reason to be, but if you try out this Dremel at the low-speed (which seems to be just right!) on the occasions that the sander hit my hand, it didn't hurt at all, but just "felt funny". And it slows down enough with pressure that I didn't worry about hair getting caught in it, because it would just come to a stop if that happened. On the occasions that it tapped the Pug's little toe pads, it didn't seem to bother her at all. Oh, one last thing... wear a dust mask and goggles -- dog nails WREAK and the dust will end up smelling up your nostrils for DAYS, and you can only imagine the kinds of nasty organisms that might live in there. If you have a way to protect your dog's face, that would be best, too... Nasty dusty stuff.

I used this yesterday to trim both my dogs nails---a black lab mix and a terrier mix. It was so much easier and less stressful than using clippers. I didn't have to fear of cutting too short. I switched nails every couple seconds to make sure it wasn't getting hot---it worked so well. The Dremel paid for itself ---groomers charge $15 to trim nails. So glad I found this.

This product was purchased specifically to prevent the cat from inflicting damage on humans and carpeting while humanely shortening her nails. The Dremel was introduced into the cat's living area for a few days. After that, it was turned on several times so she could become accustomed to its sound. The Dremel body was placed against her legs and feet so she could feel the motor's vibration. After a week and a half of introduction, the big day arrived for the pedicure. Kitty had to be wrapped in a blanket with one foot exposed at a time. Using the Dremel and a med. coarse sanding band, her nails were shortened and shaped in 15 minutes, using low speed. What an amazingly better way to deal with cat nails than risking clipping them too close and hurting her or allowing the carpet to be shredded. This Dremel tool is so sturdy and well made, easy to handle, and agile enough to maneuver around tiny cat nails. It looks interesting enough to try on craft and home projects, too. Great purchase.

I have been needing a dremel for awhile for my dogs nails. I was previously using a pedipaw. And I have to say this is a million times better!!! I'm completely obsessed with using it now after 2 uses.

I can see my goal for my dogs nails approaching very quickly!!! Thank you for making an awesome product!

I use this on my chihuahua and my dachshund on the low setting. The chihuahua is usually sensitive and hates having her nails even touched, but this Dremel works wonders. She no longer is scared of getting her nails filed down. The dachshund just sits back, relaxes, and literally starts to fall asleep as I'm working on his nails!!! I'm amazed. No more pulling and tugging at the dogs paws, no more quick nipping and no more jagged cut, sharp nails. Don't hesitate to buy this, it is completely worth the investment. It is durable, sturdy, and holds a long charge.
