This meter replaces my old one, which only tested moisture levels. This two-prong tester actually tests moisture level in the soil, Ph of the soil, and light intensity at the site of your plants. I tend to think that the light meter is less important, as it's pretty easy to tell if your plants are getting direct sunlight -- but the moisture and Ph testers are pretty important.
I say they're important as soil can often be dry on top but moist down where the roots are -- so I've found I water less when I test. So that's been a cool revelation. Note that many plants like slightly acidic soil, and you can get boxes of amendments at most greenhouses to make your soil more acidic. There are some acid loving plants, even, so adjust your soils using this meter.
It's a cool unit. No batteries needed.

Works great ! Bought this basically for the pH option and could tell if my blueberries were acid enough or not ...they were not so I had to give them more soil acid additive...Plants perked right up after a few days...

This is a great little tool to have in your gardening bag. The light meter is honestly a little useless since it only goes up to 2000 but it can still help with shaded areas. It's very easy to read and I mainly use it for the accurate reading of pH and the moisture of my soil. It really comes in handy if you're a gardener that mixes your own soil and worries about moisture retention. It even is useful for deep AND shallow planters. I would definitely recommend you get one of these at the price I bought it at, which was 12.99.

Great product. Works as describe. I bought it cause I've a few plumeria and adenium and they dont like being over water. I can't tell if the soil is dry or not cause i top off the rest of the containers that the plants are growing in with pea gravel, so this helps out a lot.

I was really excited to get this meter. I'm working super hard on my garden this year and wanted to see if the soil I planted my tomatoes was too alkaline, as I suspected. When I put the meter in the first time, it didn't move. Like, at all. Total bummer. I thought it was broken or worse, that my soil was super-alkaline. Then I read directions online and it said to leave the meter in the soil for like 10 minutes. Oh.
So I tried that. I put the meter in the soil for a long time. The meter actually moved, though not nearly as much as I had hoped. So my soil IS pretty alkaine after all. More of a bummer than a broken meter. I think I'm gonna need some nitrogen.
My point is, you have to leave this thing in for awhile. Don't expect to put it in the soil and get an immediate reading like I did. Be patient. Give it some time. And try not to forget it by leaving it in the soil too long, or you'll end up leaving it out in the rain, like I did.
Pros:
- Nice to have three different meters in one device
- Easy to use once you know how
Cons:
- No instructions included
- Takes a long time to get a reading
It's good to have a meter for your garden. Is this the holy grail of meters? Probably not, but it's an adequate device while I'm still hunting.

This soil moisture meter works well. I have tested it on 4 different outdoor plants and it showed different moisture levels in the soil. The one that I did not water for a long time showed dry and the tree that I just watered showed wet and the plant that I watered 2 days ago showed moist. When I tested the ph, it showed the different levels for the different types of soil. I have yet to test it against another test kit that I used before, but I think this is pretty accurate

Love it....Inexpensive and came right away, no batteries, no fuss. Would definitely recommend this to anyone who loves plants but struggles to get them to survive indoors.

You know that guessing thing you always do with your house plants, where you just guess what the issue is with them. This takes the guess work out of it. You can see if you are overwatering or underwatering but you must be consistent. The light meter would give you an idea if you placed your plant in a good location. The best part for me is the Ph and acidity, a big issue especially if you want flowering plants to do well. I found out the vegetable garden was way to acidic with this, and that explains why my plants were not doing to well this year. It is now a valuable tool in my garden and plant routine. I would like to acknowledge that I received this product to test for free or at a discounted price in exchange for an honest review. This does not influence my opinion about the product or its quality. I really do try to give you a fair and honest review from a person who is just your average guy. I will answer any questions that I have learned about the product.

Read about 100 reviews on this product then prayed that I wouldn't get a dud.
First thing I did was wash the probes, dry with a paper towel then stick both probes into a bottle of white vinegar.
It does need to be deep and I had to wait for a while, but ultimately the needle swung way down into the acid indicator.
I had bought another one just like this but thought it wasn't working. That was before I read the 100 reviews. I repeated my experiment with it and, sure enough, it works fine.
So, the key elements are stick it deeply into thoroughly dampened soil and wait on it for maybe 5 minutes. Then, every time, wipe the probes clean -- if they get corroded they quit working.
You CANNOT just leave it stuck in a pot and expect to get an accurate reading next time.

Great accurate pH, soil, and light meter. Keep in mind the science and limitations of this tool. The tool essentially creates a battery with two dissimilar metals (looks like zinc and steel.) This means if there is anything conducting current in your soil then you may have an inaccurate reading. This is not the right tool to test unknown soil (really, only a laboratory analysis for $40~ can identify what soil you're dealing with.) This tool is ideally suited towards premixed potting soil where you accurately know what you're putting in, or at least adding amendments that are supposed to do only one thing - such as make it more acidic. Since this tool measures electrical current then things like NaCL (table salt) water will read as a strong pH - 3.5 or lower, even though scientifically salt is a pH of 7. So, keep in mind if you use fertilizer and salts build up in your soil this tool may have inaccurate readings years down. Use this tool as more of a first line general health check.
I've tested it on distilled acid vinegar and it accurately measured a pH of 3. I added some baking soda solution with a known mass to vinegar with a known mass and the meter accurately reflected the pH value of the reaction. I made a solution of NaCL (table salt, has a pH of 7.0) and water and it showed a stronger pH as I've added more salt - reflecting the battery construction and voltage measurements.
Overall, I'm impressed with the tool for the price.
