Absolutely a must have for do-it-yourselfers. Getting critical measurements by yourself can be a chore if you need to reach a long way. I recently did some remodeling in my kitchen, and this fat baby was indespensible. The top hook feature was a great addition as well. I was able to reach out much further than with any other tape I have used before. As an added bonus, the rugged construction of the fat max holds up to the most severe jobsite abuse. I've had mine since they first hit the stores around October of last year, and it has held up just fine through every rainy day, early morning concrete pour, and sling-the-tape-against-a-concrete-wall temper tantrum. (Nobody's perfect) One small drawback: the 1-1/4" width creates quite a curvature from the top to the bottom of the tape, making short measurements a bit of a trick. You have to take care to hold the tape at an angle so as to put either the top or the bottom of the tape flat against the work surface. This is a minor consideration though, and doesn't detract from it's overall function or usefulness.

I go through tape measures like they're going out of style and this one is bomb proof. I drop it and beat on it every day and because it hasn't broken after over a month of abuse, I've furnished my entire production facility with them. Lets face it, what percentage of people that use tape measures regularly actually need to measure anything over 16ft? Not many. So therefore don't waste your money and save some weight and get the 16fter.

This tape is a monster for the toolbelt and I keep it in an unused nail pouch due to its width. Besides that I couldn't be happier. It is long enough for framing layout and its 11' standout makes it indespensible for working alone or on a ladder. All three sizes of the FatMax have the 11' foot standout which is the dealmaker. Get the size best for your purposes. The width makes it stable even in winds on the roof working by myself. Nice wide tape with very clear scale to read without bending over. Definitely a wise purchase for the experienced framer or the weekend warrior. Be sure to slow the tape upon reeling it in as the speed it can come back at can do damage to the tape long-term not to mention any wondering fingers that get pinched in the end motion. Great tape and will do it again if this one ever wears out! Buy this tape!

This is my third one of these and I love them. The first after many years something broke inside after being dropped off a ladder or bench one too many times. The second I lost--will probably find it soon now that I replaced it. They are top-notch quality and easy to read.

This is a wonderful tape measure that will really take abuse. I love the 11' stand out. I agree with the point that others have made that the return and be a bit fast, I've gotten small cuts and bruises or blood blisters on my pointer finger a few times when I've gotten it pinched and it returns. But I've learned to keep it from returing so fast (just tip it so the blade is aimed down as it get to the last few feet). It isn't a cheap tape, but then again it isn't built like one either . . . .
{edit}My tape cracked, so I'm going to have to replace it, but there is no doubt I'm going to get another FatMax!{/edit}

This is a replacement for the exact same tapemeasure that broke after 10+ years of upholstery and wood working use. I kept with the same model because why change things if they are working for you. Great product, Great Price, and it does do 11' of length before snapping.

Good
+Sturdy
+Rubber Grip
+Wide easy-to-ready blade with good stand-out
+FOURTY FEET!!!
Bad
-Huge
-Will not fit small hands or small belt holsters
I have tried many tape measures recently for use on large building jobsites. I need the longest tape measure possible to supplement my laser distance meter. The reel tapes go really far, but are really a two-person job and don't fit on a belt. This is the biggest and baddest tape that does fit on a belt... sort of.
Fatmax tapes have the features I really need on a jobsite - sturdy construction, easy reading, and long stand-out. This is the longest Fatmax. I cannot stress enough how great it is to have FOURTY FEET on your belt at a big jobsite. Any tiny pocket tape can measure 3 inches, but only this tape can make the sort of distances between steel columns that we build with.
This tape really doesn't stay on your belt unless you never run, bend over, or jump on the jobsite. The 'DEWALT DG5164 Heavy-duty Tape Holder' here on Amazon fits this tape perfectly, and makes sure it stays in place until you need it.

I purchased this tape measure for my dad as a birthday present. He was always having trouble reading the measurements on his tape measure. He would always have to stop and put his glasses on to read the measurements. He loves this tape measure because the numbers and markers on the tape measure are bigger and bolder than most tape measures. He doesn't have to put his glasses on to read the measurements when using this tape measure. After I gave him this one and he had a change to use it a couple of times, he is thinking about purchasing a second one. This way he can keep one at home, and one at his office.

This is a wonderful tape measure that will really take abuse. It has nice grips for holding onto the tape measure, the tape measure can extend to over 10 feet without snapping and it has good clear markings on it. I really like this unit. It is very smooth in its operation. The ability for it to reach out farther is reason enough to buy this unit.

I use this tape on a daily basis for measuring houses for insulation. The spring is strong enough to put the full 40' of tape back in without any problems. The standout of approx. 12 feet helps a lot when you want to "grab" the edge of a board that is out of reach. The blade coating holds up very well. I only wish there was some type of mechanism that would "clean" the tape as it goes back into the body. Moisture and very small debris can be a problem if it retracts back through dirt or moisture. Overall this is a great tape measure. I next one will be the same.
Revision: After using this 4 months the tape is broken in several places and the end finally broke off at the 2" mark. I am going to attempt contact with Stanley to see if there is something they can do since this tape measure broke so quickly.
