Composting is the answer and using the Kitchen Compost Collector is a most practical way to collect all of your organic waste. This kitchen waste collector is made from high density polyethylene and includes a carbon filter that significantly reduces any organic smells. Convenient handle lets you carry waste directly to outside composter and is dishwasher safe. For best results use only ECO 2500 replacement filters (3.5" x 3.5") only shipped and sold by Amazon. I ordered two of these and they are everything I dreamed they would be: large capacity, latching (yet easy to open) lid with carbon filter, and simple to use. Gone are the days of having bowls of scraps sitting around the kitchen and shouting across the room "Don't put that in there, that's for the worms!" We do both worm composting and garden composting, so I just took a Sharpie to our new bins and labeled them "Worms" and "Not Worms."
Although I hate plastic I took the review to heart that said they'd tried ceramic and glass containers and they strongly recommended plastic.
In case you are wondering yes, these are sized so that a standard grocery bag fits nicely. Reuse, then recycle!
Gnats are gone, stink is gone, mess is gone. A++ Exaco Trading, great product.

I'm very happy with this compost pail. It's big enough that I don't need to empty it more than once a week (we're a family of 4, mostly vegetarians). It seems very sturdy. The filter is working great, I've never smelled anything. I haven't seen a single fruit fly either.

After having tried metal and cermanic kitchen composters, we finally tried plastic. Buy Plastic. Excellent composter, great size

Perfect kitchen compost bin. Just the right size for a few days of food scraps.
It fits under our cabinets - on the counter, although it would be okay inside the cabinet under the sink too.
I highly suggest the compostable bags that are an option. Otherwise the bin gets really dirty, stinky, and in general nasty.

Initial reaction. 1-star. Cheap plastic rubbish, and I'm thinking boy am I glad I already own 3 of those great OXO compost bins. I check the price I paid on Amazon. Okay. It wasn't expensive, I'm a little less annoyed, I'll give it a go. And the wife says it looks nicer on the counter top than the OXO bins, plus 1 of these is equivalent to 3 of the OXO bins in terms of capacity. I guess the OXO is about 3/4 gallon.
We used a plastic store bag as a liner. 1-week later....
I am sold. Absolutely no smell whatsoever. We empty it much less often than the smaller OXO bins. It's the perfect size for the counter top. The carbon filter really works. Zero odor. I was concerned about the non-removable lid, which might complicate cleaning, so instead of throwing veggies directly into the bin, we use a liner. Open the lid, tie the bag, take it out to the compost heap (discard the plastic bag!). Job done, and the bin is still perfectly clean.
Really glad I didn't return it. The OXO bins are now in storage. They were great, and easy to clean, but ironically they needed cleaning much more often because you're not using a liner. And they had to be emptied daily because of the smell.

This kitchen composter is one of the best things I have bought. I love that there no no longer have a bowl of scraps on the counter. I have been using it for 3 years without any issues. I think part of the reason it has lasted is because it is made of plastic that is not rigid. The pail will actually flex a little rather than cracking if there is any pressure applied. I personally like to keep it on the floor and it has been kicked many times and never been damaged.
The capacity is good and takes several days to fill. It has been very durable. Since it is on the floor it does get the occasional kick but has never cracked. You can use it as is or get bags for it. I use bags as it makes it easier to take out and easier to clean the composter. It can even be run through the dishwasher.
The lid locks tightly in place and with the charcol filter we have never gotten any odor escaping the pail. If you are looking for a kitchen composter that will last you found it.

Carbon filter is what makes this compost bin so great! Holds the smell in fine (I empty my kitchen compost weekly living in NYC) It smells gnarly once i open it, but you'd never know otherwise. If you live in a small apartment like I do, I would suggest buying compostable bags to line the bin as it can be difficult to clean the bin in a small kitchen area.

so far it does what it promises, haven't experienced any odor whatsoever until I open it, so I just need to be good about emptying it once a week into our compost pile
the one curious thing was that it came with a small plastic handle/u-shaped clip that doesn't seem to fit anywhere nor is the unit not functioning properly

This is working out so very well! It is very sturdy, the 3 gallon bags fit this perfectly. It seals in the odor very well. I did do my research before finally deciding on this one. This was always my first choice, but I waited thinking it would go down in price or that I'd find something better for the price. But, honestly, the time came when I really really needed one and after my research this is the one I chose. I am so happy with it. I've been using it for about a month and half. I think it's actually better than the last one I had, which was the Sure Close Kitchen Waste one. The only reason I found I liked this one better was because of the more upright shape versus more of a short squarish shape of the Sure Close.
The Sure Close is good quality too though. I just think this one is overrall better. I notice less of an odor and compostable matter fits better in this than the Sure Fit.

I bought one of these about 9 years ago and wanted to replace it with a new one. I love the design, which is easy to handle when taking it out to the compost pile. I have dogs and they never bother with it when it's down on the floor. I've put egg shells, veggie peels, coffee grinds, etc. in it and can't smell anything after a week of it being in there! The top has a small square air filter that helps with escaping smells and can be changed out when needed. So now I actually have two of these.....the tan, older one, for egg shells and coffee grinds, and the new green one for veggies and fruit peels. Easy to clean! Highly recommend this. Great price too!
