General's 88CM has long been held as the industry standard for scribing and etching tools. The tungsten carbide tip performs flawlessly on even the hardest metals, and therefore works easily on ceramics and glass as well. A powerful magnet at the tool's cap quickly cleans up stray metal shavings that can damage your work piece. The 88CM also features a reversible/removable tip, and a pocket clip for working in the field.

Nice scribe, good hard sharp tip. You must remember to tighten the tip-collet snugly or the tip will slip or fall out. The magnet is not super-strong, but I bought this for the scribe, not the magnet. Pocket clip is silly unless you have a pocket liner, or like holes in your shirt pockets.

This scribe is easy to hold with the knurled grip. The scribe point itself is mounted in a 1/8 inch aluminum rod and is held in place with a collet. A quick turn of the collet will release the scribe to be changed. Or, the handle could be used as a 1/8 inch pin vise if needed. The other end has a very powerful magnet that is good for picking up small parts or for small metal chips. I highly recommend this tool.

Small, has a pocket clip, nice sharp (and easily replaceable) point- a great tool for marking, scribing, and scoring for not a lot of money. Get 2, so you can always have one stashed in the toolbox.

you know, scribe. Whence comes our verb to scribble, and it works on aluminum and steel as well as wax tablets although I don't know anyone who still uses them any more. Came at a great price and carded packaging - easy to "open" - with the tip protected by a short piece of plastic tube. The rare earth metal magnet on the end makes for another added level of functionality around the shop. You could do worse.

I ordered this as an add-on to an order. No regrets, the tungsten carbide tip is VERY sharp and scribes a nice line. The "cap" is magnetic, which has both pros and cons. I'm happy with the product.

For the price, it works very well. The only complaint (if you can call it that) is you can't set the scribe down on a bench with any metal filings on it or you'll be forever picking filings off of the magnet. To solve that issue, I try and remember to stick it to a nail head or pipe overhead rather than leave it on the bench. I haven't had any issue with the tips falling out like some others have mentioned, but I think a half minute of mixing epoxy would fix that nicely. It's not I'm going to change out the tip for anything else.

Another item I use on a daily basis. Either to fish junk out of a screw hole or scribe lines for layout.
The design today is more sleek than from yesteryear. I like it.
Delivered on time and perfect.

I love this thing. Scores lines on my angle iron just fine and of course other material. I am building a brew stand and this came in really handy for making the cut off marks. I can't foresee any future problems atm. And the price was pretty decent.

This carbide scribe is hard to beat as an Amazon $4.96 add-on. I use it mostly for hardwood layouts and occasionally metal, when i need the precision of a thin scribe line. The carbide tip holds up well. This scribe has a replaceable point that fits into a 1/8" collet, so the 88CM can also work as a 1/8" machinists pin vice in a pinch. This is not a Starrett quality tool, but for the price it's a great value. If the collet is tight, and the carbide tip sharp, this is also useful as a starting punch in leather, sheet rubber, thin polycarbonates/kydex, etc.
I haven't found the magnetic top very useful, although it's strong enough to support the weight of the pen. I used it once to pick up some tiny screws from the workbench. Same for the pocket clip. with the sharp carbide point, safety would dictate a thick pocket protector if you're going to carry this.
Great value for a carbide scribe.

for a scribe this is great. the magnet on the end is a nice added feature.
I was buying this in hopes of using it for a cheaper little hand drill, lol, trying to save a few dollars. Unfortunately the collate is fixed to the body of the pen, so you cannot change it out for a different size. Other than that it is a great scribe!
