Last week, I decided that I had enough of the cheap Chinese tactical flashlights and decided to get a high quality light without breaking the bank. The Mini Maglite LED Pro is a superb flashlight and has become my EDC flashlight of choice.

This flashlight has one mode, full brightness at 226 lumens. This is more than enough to dazzle someone or throw a beam up to 500 feet. However, it will destroy your night vision due to its high brightness if used to read a map or search a room. If having a low brightness mode in a tactical flashlight is important to you, buy a good-quality flashlight with a low mode of 5 or 10 lumens. (Most cheap flashlights have a low mode of 50-100 lumens, which is no better for night vision.) Otherwise, I would recommend purchasing a AAA keychain flashlight like the Fenix E01 for low brightness uses. For a cheat low mode, turn on the flashlight and continue turning until it comes unfocused and begins dimming. Do not unscrew it so far, however, that the head falls off. A rough estimate of this low mode to be around 40 lumens, with the other 180 lumens being simply wasted. To turn off the flashlight, partially unscrew the tailcap.

The flashlight is sturdily constructed, with the LED providing added resilience to the already sturdy Maglite Mini as there is no bulb to burn out. I have seen a Maglite Mini incan thrown out of a moving car at high speed continue working, even though it looked completely trashed. I trust this flashlight not to start flickering or otherwise malfunctioning after an accidental drop. It is fall rated at one meter, but it can handle more. Rubber seals make operation of the flashlight smooth, as well as providing a water seal. Add petroleum jelly to keep them lubricated. The holster is very sturdy and simply designed, and the Maglite is both easily accessible and does not fall out or get in the way.

For someone used to reverse clicky-style lights, turning the head requires getting used to, but soon it will become second nature. The barrel is easily gripped, and the tailcap can be used as a kubotan-style weapon of last resort. If you like Maglite and clicky flashlights, look into the Mag-tac or XL line of lights.

Despite the warnings on the package, I use 1.2V NiMH batteries and it works fine, although with some loss of brightness (160 lumens). Current draw was somewhere around 2.5 amps last time I checked.

The deciding factor was that this flashlight was made in the USA. This, as well as its surprisingly low price when compared to other brand name flashlights, made it a must-buy.

Edit: I performed a runtime test with this light today. It is rated at 2 1/2 hours with alkaline batteries. With mostly charged NiMH batteries, this flashlight has been running for 4 hours, and it is still putting out about 40 lumens. One gets less brightness with NiMH but greatly increased runtime... and it just blinked out at 4 hours. If you still need light, wait a little and turn it back on; it may give you more light. Battery voltage is 0.98 V.

One word of warning: be sure to use good batteries in this flashlight. Leaking batteries will corrode the aluminium, causing stuck batteries and a potentially ruined flashlight. Duracell or a similar brand that gives you a refund for a damaged product is the best.

I have read complaints that the LED Maglites flicker on and off, similar to older incandescent models. I use mine on a daily basis, flicker free, and have shared these tips with others at work. One problem that I have encountered is sticky operation of the head with flickering. That is easily solved by adding a VERY SMALL amount of electrical joint compound to the threads at both the head and tail (anti-oxide compound, such as "Noalox"). Clean the threads when they become contaminated with dirt, and replace the contact compound. Wipe the ends of the batteries to make sure they are clean - even a little oil off your hands can make a difference. Check to see if the ends of the batteries are dimpled and making poor contact, generally caused by dropping the flashlight on end. Also, gently stretch the spring battery contact in the base, if it has become overly compressed. While the older incandescent Maglites would light until the batteries were completely dead, the LED's must have a certain amount of capacity left to forward bias the LED. I have seen people blaming their LED lights when it was simply a symptom of low batteries. I am amazed at how bright this flashlight shines - almost too bright at times for close-up work!

Great price and super compact, obviously. I bought this as well as the 3D LED (ST3D106) at the same time. So allow me to compare the two: Both are super bright and amazing flashlights. But the 3D is better for long distance beam. The Mini Pro has a better wide flood pattern, but it doesn't go as far. It's no slouch, though. Comapred to the 350 meters the 3D goes it isn't as far, but I think I like the wide pattern of the Mini pro better in most cases. I won't need a narrow beam that much.
And yes, I know they are adjustable beam. The Mini still has a better wide pattern.

In a nutshell, the Mini Pro has the better wide beam, at the sacrifice of lower battery life and not as FAR as the larger 3D. I think it will be more practical to me than the more cumbersome 3D, which I have for its long battery life. Buy both if you can, you'll have them your whole life.

This is brighter than a D Cell maglight my dad has. A friend of mine has the pro+ mini mag and we compared them and there is not a noticeable difference in the brightness, it's only a couple lumens. The only thing about the pro plus is that it has 2 different modes which I didn't like so I got this one. Great product for your price.

After the introduction of the "Pro" line I became curious about the performance. I've purchased and used many different flashlights over the years. I'm somewhat a flashlight collector. As I usually do, I waited some time before purchase to allow for design / manufacturing revisions to iron out problems or kinks.

This is brighter than the previous "base" line of Maglight two AA LED flashlights. I have them in each of my cars and several throughout the house. They're great for most tasks. I can't tell you how many time's I've held Maglite 2 AA flashlights in my mouth while working on things.

I still have several of Maglite's original 2 AA which use bulbs and they're still going strong after these many years.

You can't go wrong purchasing Maglite.

I was in a store that sold these flashlights and it was priced at $27.99. I pulled my smart phone out and opened my Amazon app and scanned the bar code. It was $5.00 cheaper through Amazon and free shipping with Prime. I recommend Prime, by the way. I ordered it right there in the store using my smart phone and this was a Saturday. It arrived at my front door on Monday. I can't promise that you will have that kind of service. All I can say is that I was shocked at the speed that it arrived. The picture shows that it is 226 Lumens, but the package I received said 272 Lumens and it is very bright for a 2 battery double A flashlight. Maybe, too bright for some applications, but that is what pen lights are for. I am very happy with my purchase and wished I had done it sooner. Plus, the little carry case that comes with it is great when camping and you need to keep it close when doing various tasks at night.

Maglite steps into the 21st. century with this product, and they seem to be on the stick with the ever changing LED technology. They say it's 226 lumen, but that has been upgraded twice already, and they are now shipping the 272 lumen model, which is what I received. Unlike the incandescent the beam is fixed and not adjustable, but WOW is it bright enough to make up for it? YES IT IS, and with range too! Only thing I'd upgrade would be to a tail cap switch. Look out Streamlight!

Love this Maglite, have always loved Maglite since I was a scout, Very Bright, Most Lumens I have seen at this price, durable.

Tactical Rail Mountable:

Buy: UTG Flip-to-Side 25mm Tactical Flashlight Ring with QD Lever Lock Picatinny Mount, 1-Inch, Black

And add about 4 inches (about 4 times around) of Gorilla Tape To-Go

The UTG tactical rail can be flipped to the side for pistol mounts or normal for shotgun, very flexible system, durable aluminum (made in china). Now I have a 226 Lumen, 22 dollar tactical light that runs on normal, cheap batteries. Fit perfectly on my semi-auto rail. See Pics.

This flashlight puts out a ton of light! I have retired my multi-D-cell flashlights since buying this. I treated it to Lithium batteries as I have lost too many Maglites over the years to leaky alkaline batteries.

I got my first Maglite (3D) and Mini Maglite (2AA) about 35 years ago. Both, updated for LED operation, still work well, though they are not as bright as modern versions. I frequently have to go into dark areas for my work, and the Mini Maglite I've been using is not really bright enough - plus the blinking and other modes are more a problem for me then helpful.

The new one - received today, is far brighter then previous models; a lot more so then the difference in rated lumens would suggest. I may use it for work - or general use, now that I have a small flashlight that is far brighter then most other flashlights that I've used over many years.

Only thing I don't like - the blister pack. What a pain in the you know what to extract it. The Mini Maglite Pro itself is amazing!
