After searching and looking at very expensive ash vacuums; I settled on this one due to the reviews on Amazon.
We burn firewood to heat our ranch house and dust from the ashes is just part of winter. We have 3 wood stoves so cleaning a wood stove and dealing with the dust is part of life here.
I ordered this on Amazon and received it in just two days.
Used it today for the first time on cold ash... NO dust in the room!!!!!
It did it's job properly and was easy to use and set up. I am thrilled and think this little vacuum will help curb our dust problem this winter. As to using it for hot ash I am not that brave! I was after a vacuum that did not spray the dry cold ashes all over my house when I clean up around and in the wood stove. I cleaned out the wood stove with it and there was a lot of ash in the stove. Never once did it plug up or spew dust!
It worked GREAT!....5 Stars
I will leave an update after using it all winter.
For the low price a I am thrilled with this wonderful find!
I have used this now for several months.
I have vacuumed up some hot coals and lots of ash. I still am thrilled with this little ash vac.
This is the most dust free this log house has ever been! I dump it after every use because I am paranoid about fire.
When it gets to hot sucking up hot ash it will automatically shut down for about 10 minutes to cool down.
The filter works great just remember to bang it out when you dump the ash out.
I have seen these for sale at Big R and a couple other places.
Still very happy with the price I paid on Amazon and will buy another if this one dies.

This was very easy to assemble. It is not a cheap flimsy vacuum. I have used it about 10 times to clean my Breckwell P23i Pellet Stove insert. It has great suction and doesn't clog like some reviews of higher priced vacuums reported. My opinion is that if you have a couple of hundred bucks to blow then, go with the $350.00 - $500.00 models. If you refuse to pay that for a vacuum and want a great ash vacuum that does the job, buy this one.

Just realized I wrote my review of this vacuum and attached it to the filter only review. I bought an extra filter up front but don't think I will need it for a long while as it seems to remain clog free and is easy to clean off ---just a couple of taps and the ash falls off. As for the machine, it is great! It is relativley quiet and I have NOOOOO ash dust all over.. I recommend this unit highly. One note: The exhaust gets warm quickly from cooling the motor --- it doesn't necessarily mean you are vacuuming hot coals into the tank. Can't imagine what a more expensive machine could do any better!!!!!!!!

HOW COULD ANYONE WRITE A NEGATIVE REVIEW ON THIS VAC? Unless they're just a negative person with nothing better to do..
We have owned the same vacuum for going on THREE years! We have replaced the filter only a few times (MY FAULT because I didn't wait for the ashes to cool and burned the filters) We live in Maine and use our TWO pellet stoves exclusively to heat our LARGE multi-level home. We vacuum each stove once a day and empty the vacuum out about once a week during the peak season.
We love pellets and LOVE this vacuum. This year, we are going to buy a second one (just like this one too) so we don't have to carry the vacuum up and down the stairs to do both stoves.
Folks, if you're sick of the dust created from vacuuming with a regular shop-vac, BUY THIS ONE! I would purchase an extra filter to have on hand in case you burn the other one like I did (It's bound to happen). We're going to get a few extra filters this year too. They don't wear out, just take them outside and dump the ashes, give the bag a good shake and tap the sides and you're good to go for another week or two. We go by how heavy the vac gets as to when to empty the ashes but suction will decrease after it's completely full...then you'll burn your filter for sure!
So, if you're looking for an ash-vac THIS IS THE ONE!!!! One last word, we use about 9 tons of pellets a year so we use this vacuum A LOT, for 9 months out of the year.

I like it and it has powerful vacuum. It is very superb for war ashes and has even taken some red ambers into it and not caught on fire. It is kind of bulky and does get some static electricity here and there. It is well worth the price. I gave it a five but my real score was a 4.5!

Recently bought a home with a pellet stove and was cleaning out the ash by hand. After purchasing the PowerSmith ash vac the time to clean was cut down by 80 - 90%, it was cleaned much better and without the previous mess. Also used it on my fire place and it did a fantastic there also. Considered other more expensive ash vacs but decided to give this less expensive model a shot. Usually you get what you pay for but, in this case I believe that buying a more expensive ash vac would have been a waste of money. I highly recommend this product.

If it's possible to claim LOVE for a cleaning appliance, then I guess I could say that about this Powersmith Ash Vacuum. A pleasure to use due to the design, apparently executed by someone(s) who would actually USE this device.
The only issue I (and many others) have had is the construction of the reusable fabric media filter... I currently have two, (one packed with the vac, one spare bought from another seller) and BOTH arrived with holes in the seams. ANY hole in the filter renders the vac useless for its intended purpose, because ash and dust escape through the filter, resulting in clouds of such quickly filling the room.
Had both items repaired by a local alteration shop (at additional expense), but those repairs didn't last but two or three uses... as soon as the filter was hand-washed and dried, the same holes reappeared, leading to another mess.
The PowerSmith-brand manufacturer's website states a two-year warranty against defects in workmanship, so now attempting to procure replacement filters. (KEEP your receipt or packing slip!)
Will update this review (and the separate one I wrote for just the filter) with results of replacement endeavor.
A great product, but INSPECT AND KEEP AN EYE ON THE FILTERS.

Maybe a little premature, but here goes....Received my vac tossed on the wheels and hose and fired it up. Worked very well with good suction. I noticed the Red meter read 3/4 full after the 1st minute so don't know how accurate the guage actually is? Gave my pellet stove a nice cleaning and wanted to see how much was actually in can...No way the Guage should of even moved, but if that's gunna be the 1 flaw, I have no issues..Vac is small & compact, light weight and WAY better than using my big shop vac. Seems like an overall good quality unit. Smell people comment on is the new motor being used, nothing to worry about, goes away after 1-2 uses.
Update 3-9-14: Hose connector broke, called company and they were great with sending a replacement. No hard time. couldn't use vacuum for over a week and realized how much better it is than using the shop vac!

I have a pellet stove and cleaning the ashes can be quite dusty. I was using a shop vac with a HEPA filter but soot still got by. This vac is light, has good suction, and so far seems to keep exhaust soot in check. Other stove vacs are at least $100 more. The price is right on this vac. I would recommend it for home use. Probably not built for commercial use.

This little unit is a great vacuum. I have been using it for about six weeks with a pellet stove and no dust in the house. Highly recommended and worth the $$. Some have complained that the tip is too small and stops up easily. The solution is to take the tip off. The vacuum comes with several attachments for cleaning other things and I use the smaller tip for other purposes; however, the tip is not necessary when cleaning a stove
