Work Sharp's Ken Onion Edition sharpener is a sturdy tool that works very well but will eventually need replacement abrasive belts. Figuring 'Why take a chance?' I got a package of original belts for replacements. My kit includes Extra Coarse, Coarse, Medium, Fine and Extra Fine belts. The Extra Fine belt is still for the Ken Onion sharpener cassette, even if it is narrower than the others, since it is intended to be used for touching up serrated blades and gut hooks, where the extra belt width impedes honing/sharpening.
Users who don't use a honing steel frequently on knife edges will over-use one of these belts and users who don't follow the recommended sequence of belt use for re-edging, sharpening and honing will wear a belt out 'quickly', as will hobbyists wanting to change a knife's original profile. I agree with the reviewers who find these belts have a normal lifespan if used as intended.
As to pricing, home users, even those of us with a rack full of working knives, will not use up many of these belts in a year. We buy few belts and have to pay 'the long price' rather than the 'quantity discount' price. Maybe Work Sharp belts will start appearing in big box home centers and then prices will reflect bulk purchasing, without the need for shipping small packages big distances.

I debated the expense, but I thought about the times I went to to family and friend's kitchen and they always have dull or missharpened kitchen knives. Now, I take this with me as a special service for them. I have several expensive knives. A friend of mine is a professional knife maker. The belt grinder that he uses is a giant version of this and he whole-heartedly endorsed this sharpener. If there is one complaint, its that there needs to be another coarse belt included because that one gets the most use, especially when "fixing" all the dull blades in the drawer!

I'm still using the original belts that shipped with the sharpener and I've restored 6 fillet knives, a couple large kitchen knives and several pairs of scissors. The belts get more pliable and start appearing worn out but they keep on sharpening effectively. High quality materials but a little pricey ... In this case you do get what you pay for.

initial set works well and durable. if you do a variety or many blades, having extras about is very comforting when Murphy's law takes effect (cut/torn belt). company says packages of 5 each in the finer grits will be available this fall.

Great belts for the Work Sharp Ken Onion Edition. They are well made and stand up to wear as well as any other sharpening/grinding belts that I've used. They seem to be of fairly high quality as well with a flexible fabric backer. The only hitch is the price: 5 belts for $13.61 at this writing. I also use the Econaway Abrasives 3/4X12 Twenty-Five Piece Belt GENERAL Assortment (25 belts for $42 also available ship. incl. from Amazon). IMHO the Work Sharp seem to be a bit higher quality, but no where near the 2x price differential advantage offered by Econoway. I recommend that you compare both before purchase.

This is a nice assortment of belts for the Work Sharp Ken Onion edition knife/tool sharpener. This will pretty much give you every grit you need to tackle any knife (except ceramic, they have belts for that too!) One bit of advice, go ahead and order you a box of the 6000 grit. I call that the "stropping belt" as it's very fine. It's also only 1/2" wide, whereas the others are 3/4" wide. I feel this belt wears faster than the others, plus you will likely use it more for maintenance. I hope Work Sharp starts to make the 6000 grit in the 3/4"

These replacement belts for the WSKTS-KO work exactly as described when used in proper succession, on proper speed settings.
Example: One or two more alternating strokes on coarse grit may "save you" 10-20 on the white belts.
The purple 6k belt is more fragile than the others, and may show signs of wear sooner. A small "chunk" of the abrasive fell off, so I contacted WS to let them know, and customer service is sending me 6 new 6K belts to replace it!! WOW, great service Worksharp team.
Highly recommended.
EDIT: I have yet to recieve the 6k belt set as indicated, and also noticed a small amount of daylight that could be seen at the binding point of one of my 220 belts. I will test this belt on a much loved Cold Steel Heavy Machete to see if it breaks...I will attempt to contact WS one more time....more later 2014 Mar. 31 16:19.

These belts are well made with a very robust grit adhesion. They keep cutting for extended periods, longer that I expected for sharpening and profiling knife blades. I like them. I'll buy name brand instead of aftermarket when I need to restock.

These replacement belts last a long time before finally losing their sharpening ability and clogging up. But when you need a set, and I did, it's nice to know you can have them to your door in a day or two. Thanks Amazon!
