There are times when I really want to have a good flashlight, especially when walking around at night. I had never heard of tactical flashlights, nor had I any idea that they made flashlights this bright until I received one for review.
Tactical flashlights, known as TacLights, are high performance flashlights used for anything from self-defense and hunting to police and military uses. This TacLight product is 600 lumens (brightness level), has multiple modes (high, medium, low, strobe, and SOS), zoom capabilities, is water resistant (can be frozen or be in boiling water), and is powered by 3 AAA batteries. The LED light is supposed to last 100,000 hours.
UPDATE* I recently discovered that you can also use a 18650 battery with this flashlight. It's not a common battery size, but it is another option rather than the 3 AAA batteries.
So, how bright is 600 lumens? The box says 22X brighter than a regular flashlight. I decided to see what 22X brighter actually looked like. I took my best, heavy flashlight and this little, lightweight taclight outside at night. I shined it on my fence which was about 35 feet away. My flashlight has a zoom, but the illumination was weak, especially towards the center of my fence - the fence looked blurry. When I tried the taclight, I was astounded by the clarity that this bright light brought. I could see everything just like daylight! But, how does it compare with other TacLights? Unfortunately, I cannot tell you that since this is the first one I've reviewed.
I can tell you that this Bell + Howell TacLight is solidly made, yet very compact, fitting easily in my small hand. It has a little wrist loop so that you can carry it around. The on/off button is located on the base of the light. This button can be pressed halfway down to change the modes. To zoom in/out, you simply push out/pull in the head of the flashlight.
I would definitely recommend this TacLight, especially for women or college kids. Personally, it would give me some peace of mind just having such a bright light in my possession should I ever need it.
The box instructions indicates that it’s a Bell + Howell TacLight, Item # 1176FE, distributed by EMSON, NY, NY, and made in China. There is a TV advertisement video about this light which says it has a lifetime guarantee.
Pros:
- Excellent illumination, relative to a regular flashlight
- Compact and easy to use for even small hands
- Fits easily in your hand, in your purse, or in your car (5 1/4” long)
- Lightweight - 5.6 oz
- Solid construction
Cons: None regarding the product itself
This product was provided at a discounted price in exchange for my honest review. I hope it will help you determine if this product is right for you.

Tac Light Review
Not your standard flashlight. Tac Light (short for tactical light) by Bell & Howell, illuminates well and it is very easy to operate. Bell & Howell products, in my experience, are usually made of a higher quality than the standard. This flashlight uses three AAA batteries, which aren’t included. I used this during a hiking trip and it really helped at night, both in the tent and outdoors.
There are a number of useful features on this product, such as the ability to zoom the focus of the light from a broad range to a narrow field. A self-defense feature includes a blinding strobe light, which may be useful in some self defense situations, assuming you have time to reach for your Tac Light. Most people will probably use it in its normal mode or in the low light mode, which is less blinding and conserves battery power when you don’t need a 600 lumen light.
Tac Light is lightweight and durable, and offers a comfortable grip and easy operation. It is small enough to take in a purse or store in a glove box or drawer. This product offers enough features to make this a good contender in the tactical light category. There are other models that are more than $100, of course they will have superior features. Tac Light sports the brightness and durability shown in the advertising.
This Bell & Howell model, priced at $25, is on the lower end of the price scale, yet is robust enough feature-wise to rank it alongside more expensive models.
If you’re looking for a good general use tactical light, then Tac Light by Bell & Howell will certainly not let you down.
The Tac Light features 5 preset modes:
•Bright mode (Can be seen up to 2 nautical miles away)
•Low-light mode
•Strobe Mode (Perfect for stunning predators)
•Zoom Function (Great when you need to see something far away)
•SOS Mode
I received this at a discount in exchange for my honest opinion.

This is now my best flashlight. I can't say anything bad about it! There's an odd but cool thing about this flashlight. When you adjust the beam to it's smallest and most focused, it's not round like most are...it's a square exact image of the LED chip!

Wow this light is SUPER bright! It's a small flashlight so I didn't think it would be very bright. I was surprised when I first used it as it could light up our entire master bedroom from this tiny size light. The light turns on and off with a push button on the end. I also has a wrist strap if you want to hook it on a backpack on possible hang in a tent. The top part of the flashlight pulls back and forth to increase the band of the light. You can have concentrated beam or use it to light an entire space. Overall a great light and very industrial feel. Not plastic and cheap at all. This has a full metal construction and has weight to it. Since this light has a flat base on the handle you can also stand it on a table so it can function as a type of lamp. Overall very happy with this. The light said it has a SOS function. I'm not sure what this would be as I don't find any button that makes it flash for an emergency situation. This wasn't a selling feature for me so I am not concerned with it. I did receive this item at a discount in exchange for my honest review.

This is an awesome little flashlight. Brighter than any flashlight I've seen before and has the different modes on it. Very cool. This will be our go to flashlight for power outages and such.

Projects A very bright beam that can be focused to wide or telephoto by sliding out the lens. The tight beam will reach out beyond fifty yards. I did not try freezing it in a block of ice, dropping it in a deep fryer or running it over with my Hummer, but it is very well built and has a solid aluminum case.
The unit uses three AAA batteries and has two flashing modes to scare away burglars, prowlers and other unsavory characters. It's kind of expensive for a flashlight but the quality and performance is there

Works with AAA (3) batteries.
Easy to switch from the different modes and works great. This purchase is for my home in case of emergency or intruders. I am able to switch between modes with one hand which is a plus!
Admit I apparently purchased the last one in stock since the next time checked, was temporary out of stock.

Don't be fooled by the cheaper knock-offs or exaggerated claims of brightness! THIS flashlight is the real deal. Most flashlights may look alike these days, but they are not all created equal! Read on to be illuminated! :D
So, I received this flashlight as a gift, but was horrified when I saw that it takes 3 AAA batteries! It has been my experience that 3 AAA batteries last all of maybe 15 minutes in these flashlights, and then you may as well just throw the flashlight away, unless you want to keep feeding it expensive batteries, as it will just end up sitting in your junk drawer.
Well, upon further inspection, I saw the the end cap and the 3-AAA battery pack both had rather large spring-loaded contacts on them, which looked like they would allow for some extra room inside the case. I whipped out one of my 18650 Li-Ion rechargeable batteries, which all of my other flashlights take, and VOILA! It fit perfectly!
The battery quagmire being solved, this is now my favorite flashlight! Why don't they mention that this flashlight is made in such a way that it will accommodate the 18650's which every other LED flashlight on the planet these days takes? Ya'd think they'd plaster that fact on the box and on the Amazon description page. Just think how many people passed up this flashlight because they, like myself, think that it only takes AAA's?! Ah, the dysfunctionality of modern business!
I would never have purchased this flashlight, thinking that it only took AAA's- usually, most other flashlights made to accept triple-A's in that little 3-battery holder, do not accommodate the 18650's.
Anywho, as for brightness: Keep in mind that the advertised 600 lumens is is *real lumens* , which translates to about "3000 lumens" in Chinese knock-off parlance. So don't look at some $8 knock off and say "Oh, this one is cheaper and it has 2000 lumens!", because the brightness claims of those cheaper flashlights are greatly exaggerated. I have some of those other exaggerated CREE flashlights, -believe me, this Bell & Mr. Howell is far brighter than any of them.
The Zoom works great! It works smoothly. In flood mode, it illuminates a HUGE area. And in spot mode, it sharply illuminates a good sized area, far away. And of course, you have all the permutations between the two extremes.
Another great thing about this flashlight is the switch. On the $8 knock-offs, the switches fail quickly- they're always the first thing to go- and that's the end of the flashlight. Also, on the cheapies, the switches often cause the light to dim and flutter. Not so with this B&H. The switch appears to be of higher quality, and is rock solid so far. And the nice thing is, every time you turn it on, it's always in full power mode. Not like some pain-in-the-A flashlights where every time you turn them on, they're in the next mode.....so you may turn them on, and it'll just happen to be in strobe mode on that particular time (I have at least one like that- it drives me crazy!!!).
I don't know why they have to even have all of these different modes. Really, does ANYONE EVER use the strobe or SOS modes? (Give me the days when flashlights had 2 modes- on and off!)
This flashlight is a little on the heavy side- but hey, for the relatively low price, it's a much higher quality flashlight than the el cheapos; you can't have everything. (Well maybe you could, if you're willing to pay $150 or more for a stinking flashlight, but I will not be doing that! This flashlight is more than adequate for my needs, and is still reasonably priced. )
tl; dr; version: Much better than the cheaper knock-offs and rechargeable 18650's will fit right in with no modifications. 600 honest lumens are brighter than 2000 exaggerated Hong-Kong Lumens.
Spend the few extra bucks for this over the cheaper knock-offs, it's well worth it.

This thing is so cool! It is so incrediblly bright too! You turn it on and it's like you turned on the sun. You can have a wide spread beam or a small focued area. Either way this thing will give you all the light that you will ever need.
