I am 5'2" and am 50+ years old. My husband has a large and heavy gas powered trimmer that he and my sons use but I wanted one that I could use. I decided to buy locally but wanted to do a review here because this is where I started my search. I ended up with this Trimmer for a couple of reasons-reviews, price and accessibility locally. First let me say-LOVE IT! You have to snap 2 pieces on-the 2 black pieces you can see in the photo which takes a mere 2 minutes and you are literally good to go. We have 4 acres and I thought I would just do around the house but this machine is so amazing I couldn't stop! There is that instant gratification you get with a machine like this and well I just kept going. I won't say I have done the whole 4 acres but if I could put enough electric cords together I could absolutely do it all. It is very easy to operate, lightweight enough for me and the shaft can be shortened or lengthened so my sons and husband can use it too. I like it because I just pick it up and go while my son was mixing oil/gas and pulling on the cord to get his going! I was able to get through some areas of the lawn that let's just say were "overlooked" by my boys so they were pretty overgrown-tall and dense and no problem at all. I am using the spool that it comes with and I would say I have used this for a couple of hours each of the last 2 days. Another plus-a good workout for your arms! Even though it is lightweight and easy to use holding a machine you don't normally hold for hours will make your muscles sore! I thought this would be our back-up trimmer but everyone really liked it so I am saying this is going to the front of the line for use around the house and the gas powered for further out on the property. I just wish I had purchased this a long time ago.

This thing has power! My last electric trimmer gave out after less than a year which was annoying and disappointing. I decided to try trusted B&D and as always, they did not disappoint.

Edited: I've had this less than 2 months and used less than 3 times and the plastic piece that hold the spool n in place literally melted :/

I almost did not buy this because of the negative reviews noting problems with the line feed. I had a Black and Decker trimmer for 10 years and it worked well. This has the same mechanism as the old one. I had some trouble with the line feeding at first. When it arrived, the spool looked like the picture in the manual showing how the line should not be wound if you want it to feed properly. They should ship it with something to hold the line in place. Once I got the line straight, I have not had any problem with it.

The pictures show the trimmer position with the wheel as the end guide for the line. I have found that if you use it as a front guide on the fence and trim from the curved part of the guard, it works much better. The same applies for edging. You need to actually be a bit in front of the trimmer when you turn it sideways to edge.

I have re-wound the spool. I have done this for years. I was careful to get it wound evenly. It feeds great. I wouldn't waste the money on factory spools.

i bought this trimmer a few weeks ago and it worked good. light weight, seems sturdy, hope it will last a long time, we'll see. i bought a craftsman 2 years ago and it was a bad trimmer. this black and decker trimmer definitely much better than craftsman trimmer or other brands with the same price. it is powerful enough to cut tall grass but not too heavy to use. the autofeed feature is good, i have no problems with it. the guide wheeling for edging is a very good feature to have, very useful!! i use this trimmer to edge my lawn and it works great. i would highly recommended this trimmer for people who have a medium size yard, don't mind the extension cord, and don't need a lot of power. if you have a big yard, you don't like to pull the cord around then this trimmer probably is not for you. so far i have no complaints, the trimmer works good and it meets and exceeds my expectations for a $49 trimmer. over all it is a great deal. you can buy this trimmer at homedepot for the same price $49.

Owning several Black & Decker tools, those experiences give me a clear perspective on their engineering designs and consumer usability. I replaced a Grass Hog 600 trimmer with this Grass Hog 900...the 600 auto-feed wore out and I didn't want to invest any money in a tool several years old.

The 900 assembled quickly and was ready to go to work in less than 5 minutes: all that was need was to install the 14 inch guard and to mount the grab handle on the shaft. The wheel design is quite smart...it eliminates having to bear the weight of the trimmer when used for edging since the wheel takes care of that and rolls smoothly across grass or hard surface.

The GH900 Trimmer is a good tool for a homeowner and is not engineered for commercial use. It sold at a very good price along with Free Shipping from Amazon...I certainly recommend buying the GH900!

I'm a 56 year old female and have been using string trimmers for over 30 years. I hated the old bump on the ground electric trimmers because they needed so many manual adjustments and it was a pain to take everything off and advance the line manually. Seemed like every time you would take it apart the spring would throw all the parts into the yard, so a lot of time was wasted putting the trimmer back together again. My husband has purchased several gas trimmers and they work fine, but on my large yard with woods behind us it became increasingly difficult to keep up the trimming. My arms would ache when I finished. I found a few electric Black and Deckers with the auto advance wire on front at yard sales, and I was glad I didn't pay very much for them becaue they were truly junk. There are a lot of branches in the woods, and every time the line would hit a branch it would then grab that wire and twist it until it was totally deformed. All of the above issues were fixed with this trimmer. It's lightweight, does a great job on trimming, and doesn't wear me out like the rest did. The auto advance feature worked great (no wire on front anymore) and it's powerful enough to cut through grass, weeds, vines, small saplings and small hedge bushes that have just started to grow. I ddn't have to manually advance it t all, and I have used it three times now. The only issue I had was with the edger. Because it has auto-advance string, every time the string advanced it would wiggle so that the edging was not exactly as straight as I would have liked. But nevertheless I'm more than thrilled with the way this trimmer performs! By far the best one I have ever used.

Replacing a previous Black & decker trimmer that I've had at least 20 years. Could have bought cheaper but the brand is quality and I would rather have good equipment and not worry about failure. I really like the added wheel when edging as it can get heavy after awhile. It is a little more involved to change positions rather than the button and turn I had before but that is fine. I would recommend this item to anyone. It is really easy to use and has more adjustable height positions than before.

I'm 74 and do my own mowing, edging, and blowing and this trimmer is amazing. My neighbor who is even older has one and I was hooked watching her. I discovered I could buy the bulk string and wind my own spools. It's actually fun to zip around my edges. I'm glad I got the more powerful model. It never stalls, It gives a beautiful clean edge. It's very light weight. Who needs a gardener?

Please. Stop what you are doing, stop comparison shopping. Stop fretting over the best string trimmer and buy this. NOW! It kicks grass!

I am a fat little old single lady of 62. I have fibromyalgia and arthritis. I just moved back East 6 months ago and am dealing with a small row house back yard. It's green but has no grass to speak of, just very hardy, healthy weeds that pass for grass if you squint. Since this is a rental and I have already sunk enough of my own sheckels into paint and better tile floors in the kitchen and bathroom, I thought I could get away with a lightweight lithium battery powered string trimmer to keep the back yard tidy. As a house warming gift, a friend gave me Black & Decker Model No. LST136 40V MAX* Lithium High Performance String Trimmer with Power Command. Well, not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but that was an out and out piece of crap! The battery does not stay charged so when I rolled up my sleeves to go out and whack, the thing puttered out in 5 minutes. I would have to recharge the battery for 24 hours to get another 5 minutes of work out of this. Philadelphia has a lot of thunderstorms and sun showers in the summer and the weeds (and grass) thrive on the combo of heat and moisture.

Since I get sick of recharging my life in to keep it running-cell phone, Kindle, flash light, tea kettle, Clairsonic - I opted for something that just plugs and plays. This baby is IT!

Based a lot on Miansa's great review of this product, I pressed the 'buy' button. I just got this yesterday, assembled it today (basically attached the handle and the guard) in under 5 minutes with a tiny Phillips head screw driver (and me half blind) and did a combo Mad Max/Born to Be Wild number out in the back yard. This trimmer takes NO prisoners! It has power and guts. My back yard looks better than the ones on either side of me-and they have real, heavy duty lawn mowers. This is light, my arms and wrists were not sore when I was finished and I felt like a young cowgirl while I was out there obliterating ankle high weeds posing as lawn.

Do yourself a favor. Buy this. It will not disappoint!

I had to come in from weed wacking the yard to write this review before I forget. I usually use a friends Stihl gas trimmer but decided to have my own knowing that electric is more green and less expensive. This works incredible and self feeds cord flawlessly. without wasting cord. I would do an acre of grass with this if I had to. Using an electric cord is not a problem as a 100' spool can be purchased for around $20. Another benefit is that it is not loud like a gas powered and does not need tuning or maintenance. For thick grass you have to make 2 passes but since it is light it goes by quick and is not an issue for me. I highly recommend this to anyone who has light to moderate grass/weeds and works within proximity of 100-150' from an electrical source. Black & Decker always makes great products. Back out to the yard ---
