Forgive me if I seem a little preachy, but quite a bit of people misunderstand what this tool is for: this is a high speed, LOW torque (in other words, do NOT apply excessive pressure), LOW amp (not much mechanical power), multi functioning rotary tool. Dremel will most likely NEVER make a rotary tool that is high speed high torque, high amp, because that's not their niche. This is for weekend warriors, do it yourself-er types, this for crafts and hobbies, this is NOT an industrial grade spinning tool, if that is what you are looking for, get a die grinder, angle grinder, flexible shaft motor tool, get high powered electric or pneumatic, Milwaukee, Foredom, Ingersoll Rand, something else, not Dremel. You'll only be disappointed if you go the Dremel route with that expectation.
For Dremel's, you let speed do the work. Unless you are dealing with plastic or wood, something that melts or catches aflame, then go for high speed. Slow down on metal, speed up in ceramic (don't quote me on the ceramics, that's just my experience), go middle ground for wood, slow for plastics, and so on. I suggest ramping up the speed on a practice piece of the material you intend to remove stock from, until you reach the maximum speed you can achieve with ruining the substance in question, and then, go work on the actual piece.
Here, let's cut to the chase: Positives of Dremel 4000
+It is low powered, ergo, gentler on your work, more forgiving when you make a mistake
+It is very speedy, but not TOO speedy, as in, not a pnuematic die grinder spinning at speeds that would make a bullet cringe.
+Dremel has a ridiculously nice supply of accessories for it, good from jigsawing to power planing
+It is a multi tool extraordinaire, capable of many different tasks
+Ergonomic and very useful overall, a pleasure to work with

Negativity about the 4000
-It is pretty loud for its miniscule size, a downside if you have sensitivities to noise like me
-It is low torque, so you should not use force to get work done faster
-Low amps means it is not powerful enough to hold its own in large amounts of material without choking on its carbon brushes.
-It is a multi tool, not a tool, so it will never be good enough at one job alone to be a keeper in THAT respect

The Dremel works smoothly, without a hitch, at least in my case. If I were to recommend any 2 accessories/attachments, I would get the detailer's grip, and the almighty keyless chuck. The chuck, because it is time saving in the extreme, and time is everything to the discerning hobbyist/artist. The detailer's grip, because the flex shaft has that irritating extra hassle in terms of set-up, and is less ergonomic in my opinion, AND, most of all, cannot stand a kink of less than five inches without overheating, so it really is more trouble than it is worth, to me. So, altogether, I would recommend this tool to any doing small scale, hobbyist work, DIY'ing, and similar stuff. That's all she wrote. Peace.

I upgraded from a dremel 200 to this, after I burnt out the 200 trying to cut a hex bolt with the cut off wheel. This was painful exercise with the 200, which would slow down while cutting and speed up when it got hot. The 4000 however, doesn't slow down (or get hot for that matter). After a short time and lots of sparks (lovely metal sparks) the bolt was cut. The 4000 turned a tedious job into a fun one, so much so that I started cutting other stuff just for kicks.

The DREMEL 4000 rotary tool is the state-of-the-art version of its worldwide known versatile tool. It combines the features that has made it famous, and adds few more that makes it better that ever, such as its improved shape and ventilation system, its electronic feedback and its overall motor power, as well as the wide amount of accesories and attachments available that ensures you that, no matter what kind of proyect you have in your hands, there's always a right option ready to make your job easier and enjoyable.

EDIT (11/6/2011):
Wow...i didn't realized I wrote this review exactly a year ago. Right now i'm cutting some pieces of a wood plank of about 1cm thick using the multiSaw attachment. It scares me as hell, but after some practice i'm managing to do so and i must say is easier that i thought.

I hold my opinion from a year ago, this tool is flawless. It has never let me down. I'm looking forward to the new attachments and accesories to come.

Everything needed was included in this kit to grind my dog's nails the day I recieved it. It has three different sanding band grits, and two of each band: coarse, fine and extra fine. It comes with a guard you can screw on, which is also adjustable. I like to use it so that none of the parts touch his skin, which could startle him. It is corded and ensures I always have enough power to get the job done quickly and reliably. I'm very happy with this tool. I have only had it a few days, but it feels like good quality. It is made in Mexico.

Update 1-22-2013: I now have three dogs and use this on all of their nails. I especially love it on dark colored nails because I'm afraid of cutting into the quick, but with this, I just get the job done. It only takes a few minutes and they are all done. My dachshund took to it right away. My rescued Pekingese came with curled dew claws. I think this works really good on the curled dew claws because it removes the nail so gradually and the dog doesnt have to sit for very long and then he's done. I think everyone with a dog should be able to experience how easy it is. I get extra sanding drums right in town. I'm impressed with this tool. It has lasted me a long time and I use it regularly. I love the case and that it stores so neatly.

Update 12/15/2013: I'm still using this Dremel. It is still just as good as the day I bought it. Its held up well and been reliable. :)

If you've never owned a Dremel you probably think "what would I ever use that for?" Then once you own one you discover all kinds of things it's great for. Removing rust, cutting off bolts, screws, etc. Routing, polishing, all around great little tool.

I have been impressed with my Dremel 4000 120 Volt 1.6 AMP motor and 5 year warranty. It has smaller exhaust ports than the 4200, but same amps and RPM. I also added a universal mandrel, so I don't need to change the collets for different size attachments. The universal mandrel allows for the adding of the EZ-Lock mandrel atop. The universal mandrel is hand tighten and loosen, and locks up on the attachment shaft without use of the wrench tool. Overall, an excellent performer. Though I gave it 5 stars, if I were allowed, it would be 4.8/5.

The only issue, which is understandable, is that you must let the tool cool down as it gets very hot on tough applications. I lost the key to my safe lock which was a Brinks R-70 high security. I couldn't get the bolt cutters to do it, so the Dremel was my best option. The tool had to cool down as I got through about halfway on the shaft of the lock. The cool down period was 10 minutes between cutting episodes. I let the tool attachment do the work using the high RPM and light pressure, slow going. There was minimal wear on EZ456 cutting wheel and did this job without any problems.

I have heard people complain that the Dremel fails at times. It might be the way they hold the Dremel, covering exhaust ports with their hands and then the tool overheats. This might be Dremel's theory with the larger exhaust ports on the Model 4200.

I personally think that the extra cost of the 4200 is not justified, go with the 4000 and save some money. Better yet buy more attachments with the savings!

Very handy tool, extremely adaptable to many tasks. So far it has not disappointed me in any way. Light weight yet powerful and capable, seems to be constructed from very good quality materials. I chose the one Dremel calls top of the line because I want something that will do the job when I choose it from my tool box to do something with it, this tool does not disappoint me. I cut a 120# grease drum in half last weekend with this tool and it did a great job for me. I installed a cut off wheel supplied in the kit and put it right to work at a medium high RPM, it cut the sheet steel drum with ease.

How did I ever get by without this tool? I have found it so useful, I decided to buy several accessories from Amazon. I am delighted with this product! If you check out my Stillen Supercharger install video on youtube under RedonKiLaus, you can see the results of cutting out the hood in part 10! It cut the hood like butter! I highly recommend this product!

I have had Dremel tools of this kind for a long time. I am giving this one five stars based on the quality of the tool itself.
I really want to emphasize however that the all Dremel tools and their accessories are light duty tools. They are an ideal supplement to a workshop to do "that little special thing". As a part of any kind of serious project however, forget it!

DREMEL SAVES! stripped allen screw? no problem make a fleathead. Broken knife tip? no problem cut the knife back into a sharp triangle then use ceramic attachment to sharpen it. Need to cut different shapes in different materials? no problem, DO IT! I haven't even used my grinder ever since I got this. MUST HAVE for everyone
