I use this knife to carve spoons and it works great. Made of quality high carbon steel the knife keeps a razor edge with occasional stropping. The handle comes unfinished which I liked, I put a nice finish of my own. Also remember high carbon steel will rust if it stays wet. But you need HC steel because stainless steel does not hold an edge.

would buy again and again, Mora is a brand to trust!

Takes some practice to get used angles and how the blade works with the wood grain. Be careful with youngsters and supervise accordingly. This knife is not forgiving due to the different carving methods it can be used for. It is VERY sharp right out of the box and requires some focus to prevent nasty cuts. As with all mora knives, this is a worthy woodcraft tool and makes a great addition to any woodsman's kit.

This is a fantastic knife for carving spoons. I recently took up spoon carving and was in search of a good quality but moderately-priced hook knife. The Mora 164 seems to be the ticket. It was sharp out of the box, but had a knick from shipping. A few minutes work with a stone fixed it up just fine. About ten minutes later, I had a nicely shaped spoon bowl that was far better than those I had previously carved with a gouge. I was very impressed with the quality for the price, and will not hesitate to buy a few other styles from Mora in the future.

Out of box, the knife was not sharp enough for me. The edge is profiled well, but there seemed to be a bit of a burr still on. So I just made a round strop, charged it with honing compound, and stropped the inside edge a bit. The outside edge can be honed with just a flat strop.
The back of the knife has uncomfortable ridges left over from manufacturing, so I recommend taking those off with a diamond file or sandpaper (most metal files aren't hard enough. Another thing I might remove is the tip. Rarely ever do I use it for actual cutting. It just seems to make little gouge marks if I'm not careful.
Overall though, It's a great knife. Good grip, shape, and has good steel. Carving a 2 inch dia. bowl in hard maple took 4 hours, but I only had to run it over the strops twice.

I'm just learning to carve spoons, so I ordered this knife to attempt my first spoon bowl. I also ordered the MoraKniv Wood Carving 120 2.35 inch knife and with the combo of these two I carved my first spoon from oak. Honestly the 120 seems a little bit sharper from the package, but I plan on sharpening both soon. Both knives surprised me right away with the sturdy construction. In the product image the curved blade looks very thin but it's actually thicker than I expected. I chose the the 164 because it is a single sided blade which would allow my to place my thumb against the spine of the blade, and I'm very happy I did!
Carving bowls is not an easy task, at least not for me, but I began to get the hang of it by the end of my first project. The handle is sturdy and allowed me to use the knife comfortably for over an hour.
I am looking forward to years of future use with this knife.

This is an excellent little knife. Comes from the factory with a burr that was easily removed by 30 seconds of work on a strop. I have made a few spoons with this so far and the blade has remained sharp with little more than one or two passes across the strop in between. I have used it in birch and oak so far and have no complaints.

Some reviewers have complained about the fact that this knife doesn't come razor sharp out of the box. Carving knives like this need to be be very sharp so you will need to at least run them across a strop after each use. If you are not already set up to sharpen properly, you should really look into learning how before you begin carving. That said, it only took 30 seconds with a leather strop and some polishing compound to remove the burr and bring the blade to a keen edge.

Love this knife for spoon carving and rounding things out. Comes very sharp, holds its edge well, and well made. I've had more expensive German knives come apart with less usage and wear than this one.

BUT beware - the point is wickedly sharp. Cut safely and properly, or, hypothetically, you can quite easily embed a startling amount of the tip of this knife in your flesh if it slips. Not that I've done that. Twice. A serious knife, so be serious about safety with it.

The Mora 164 is an ideal knife for carving spoons and small bowls out of green wood. It's one of the standard shapes used in Slojd, a traditional Scandnavian woodworking program. It'll need sharpening when you receive it (I use slip stones) but it holds an edge well and will deliver decades of service.

I've had this a while now and have used it for nearly two dozen spoons and one soup bowl. I also used it to rough out some arrow shafts. Within that framework, I couldn't ask anything more of it. It's a solid tool and performs exceptionally well. For the money, I guarantee you won't beat it. Just buy it and put it to work!

Works great! I have just begun my new hobby of making hand carved spoons, bowls, cups, etc. This is my first (and only spoon knife) so I do not have much experience with other spoon knives. But, I can say that working with this knife has been easy. You will get better with time, so enjoy all the mistakes and wonders that you can create with this tool.

Those pruning saws always cut well when new but seem to get dull very quickly. With their close set, needle-like teeth they're also difficult to sharpen - and I've sharpened regular saws using saw sets and files. Eac...
