AWESOME LIGHT. Just received this light and tested it. It comes with both a CR123A battery, as well as a quality AA battery. Both batteries inserted into the light without issue. Upon inserting the AA, there is a small amount of spring pressure put on the battery in order to close the tail cap, however, it is a non issue.

I tried the CR123A battery first and the light worked perfectly. The high setting is very bright with a good hot spot and plenty of spill. Very few, if any, artifacts can be spotted in the beam. The strobe and low setting also worked fine with just the right amount of light on the low setting.

I then inserted the AA battery. I was actually taken back on how much light was produced with a AA battery on high. Visually, it appeared very similar to the amount of light the lithium battery produced. Low and strobe also worked fine.

The light is very well made and should give you no problems. Streamlight has excellent customer service, so if you do have any problems, they are willing to stand by their products, from my experience.

I would not hesitate to purchase several of these lights, as the "duel fuel" capability is the best selling point of this model.

If you are looking for a great light, do not hesitate to purchase this one.

Can I add a sixth star? Having a ProTac 1AA for about four years, I was very pleased to stumble upon this new iteration. Originally I bought the 1AA for its very compact size, utility of a common battery, and good light output. Now with the ability of the 1L-1AA to use a CR123 for higher output makes it an outstanding light! Its slightly larger size fits the hand better than the original. It clips in the pocket very nicely, or even clips into a belt loop. Just be mindful of brushing against doors, walls or chairs. Even clothing may dislodge it, should you use a belt loop.

The light output with a CR123 is very impressive because it's a 3V lithium. I am even likely to buy lithium AA batteries for the notably longer battery life. Still, a standard alkaline AA will work if you have a bulk pack in your emergency supply kit. The high performance CR123 capability, combined with the standard and sufficient AA versatility is the BIG selling point for me. I may even get a second one soon, just to have it around.

Excellent pocket/camping/EDC light with the ability to use either a AA for 150 lumens or a CR123 for 350 lumens...Have both Sure fire and Stream light flashlights, both are very good, but Sure fire are way over priced. They are a higher grade aluminum body, but I've abused stream light in hunting, shooting competition, backpacking, etc.. And the Stream light is a waaaay better value....

Good product for the price. Pocket clip is strong and functional. Nice that it can be clipped to a hat without having to take the clip off and flip it backwards. Nicely redesigned. Light is bright with a neutral tint. Low is useful at 40 lumens, high is well suited for a variety of tasks both indoors and outdoors. NOTE: I am referring to 350 lumens high setting with a CR123 battery. The dual fuel capability is versatile and more and more lights will probably have this feature moving forward. Comparing the beam to a Streamlight ProTac 1L (180 lumen CR123 light) the hot spot in the 1L-1AA is larger and hotter. It fills more space with more light giving better peripheral vision. The low setting of 40 lumens is (IMO) more effective for indoor tasks that require more than 12 lumens but not 180 (high ProTac 1L) or 350 (high for 1L-1AA with CR123). This gives enough light to easily see indoors without going through your battery too fast. The light feels nice in the hand. It's slightly longer than the ProTac 1L and the tail cap has knurling which adds a more secure feeling when you hold it.

Now I want to talk batteries. There is a rechargeable that is safe to use with these lights. You can also use these batteries with Surefire lights. Amazon sells them. Here is a link.

K2 Energy LFP123A Rechargeable Li Ion 3.2V Battery Replaces CR123A - Single

These batteries are fully charged at 3.65v. They can be used safely to 2.8v. They have a nominal capacity of 600mAh. The chemistry is Lithium Iron Phosphate or LiFePO4. They maintain a steady 3.2v. This means your light will maintain a high level of light output. If using the light for a long time the microprocessor may stage down the light output because of thermal regulation, but not due to the voltage dropping. 3.2v is maintained for more than 90% of the charge cycle. Once the light enters "low mode" turn the light off, and charge them up. Simple. Over discharging can damage them. The runtimes are decent in the Streamlights I own. Protac 1L, ProTac 1L-1AA. I also use this in a Gen 2 Surefire Fury, 600 lumens. (no runtime test yet conducted on the Surefire with these batteries) It saves money in the long run and the fact that you can charge them up at any time means you will not have to guess how much power is in your light. When you turn on your light, you're getting max output, sustained. One battery charges in 80 min and 2 batteries charge in 160 minutes. Those charge times reflect 2.8v up to full at 3.65v. I use the charger that came with the batteries made by the same company. There is a picture in the link above. You can charge these batteries ONLY in a charger that specifically states it can charge LiFePO4 batteries! Here is another example:

XTAR VP2 Independent 2-Channel Battery Charger w/ Dual Voltage Display, USB Power Bank for 18560 and similar Lithium Ion and LiFePO4 Cells (Simple Kit - no Car Charger included, A/C adapter only)

Do not charge above C/1. The capacity is 600mAh so charge at NO MORE THAN 600mA or .6A. Really 300mA (.3A) to 500mA (.5A) is safe and still fast. Keep a spare set with you and be ready. Most chargers come with or offer a car adapter to charge on the go.

I've carried a Streamlight Protac 2AA for about the last four years. I work in a machine shop and have absolutely beat the thing up and it hasn't missed a beat.
But it is (in my opinion) too large for pocket carry, and so I've purchased several smaller lights to try to find one that could match the features and durability of the 2AA Protac without success. (Cue bad dramatic music)
Until now.
This thing is probably about as perfect an ESC light as it gets. The clip is awesome- I keep it lens down in my pocket, but the clip still allows me to clip it to the bill of my ball cap to use as a headlamp when I need to. It's plenty bright with good run time off of rechargeable AA batteries (buy Panasonic Eneloops, you'll thank me later) and with a CR123A it pretty much matches the performance of my TLR-1s, though the beam is a little yellower.
If it's as durable as my 2AA (which I anticipate it will be) I expect to be carrying this for years to come.

Streamlight products are the best. Ive owned the PT2L and the PT1AA. The 1L-1AA is brighter than both and the fact you can use either CR123 or 1AA is a neat feature. The clip is a really sturdy and can be clipped to your hat for hands free lighting. I primarily bought this for my hunting pack and its panned out...just make sure you have extra batteries as you only get an hr and a half on the high setting with the CR123s. I keep a set of both the 3V and AA in my pack for back up. Perfect size light, fits in hand well, plenty bright at 350 lumen and versitile (Hunting/EDC/2 fuel sources). Great light.

This is a fantastic flashlight. The ability to use both CR123A and AA battery sizes makes it unbelievably versatile.

I am a big Streamlight fan. I've got several of their flashlights, and this one is made to the same quality standards that I have come to know and love.

Yeah, it's that good!!! Compact, powerful, versatile, and sturdy. I don't need anything more from a flashlight. The ability to change from a Lithium123 battery to a AA is a great option. It should become an industry standard.

I own several Streamlight flashlights and this is my favorite and the one I carry all the time. The "dual fuel" feature is nice so that you can use either one 123 or one AA battery but it is also nice because it adds about an inch in length to the ProTac 1l model. (Non dual fuel). This makes it fit just right in my hand without being too short or too long. I found the 1L to be a little too short and the 2AA to be too long but this one is just right so that I can activate the tailcap with my thumb with the beam just at the end of my little finger. The amount of lumens with the AA battery is more than adequate for any pocket hand held light applications.
